Is It Really Necessary?

A We R Memory Keepers

Frame Punch Board Review:

New babies are already expensive – and price gauging is rampant – here is our list of scrapbook kits that are truly worth the money.

At the top of the list for structure, not necessarily for comprehensiveness, this scrapbook kit from Little Growers includes a keepsake box, footprint ink kit, and some milestone stickers. We like it because you can include memories that don’t lie flat or fit inside a traditional scrapbook.

Especially if you are not already a craft hoarder (like us), this kit gives you the opportunity to gather babies first memories without a lot of hassle. The memory book is sturdy and includes a variety of different pages so that you aren’t stuck staring at a blank page. (Avoiding a lot of pressure.) It is easy to use but to make it truly personal, we recommend supplementing this kit with some stickers or project life cards like these _____.

If you want to make your own paper photo frames, it is also frustrating.

You could spend a whole afternoon slicing out paper frames from your scrap paper stash and still only have enough picture frames to complete one project.

Until now, our best solution was to simply mat our pictures onto a large rectangle of scrap paper and call it a day.

But doing this isn’t our favorite option.

First, it wastes a lot of paper.

Second, it doesn’t really help the picture blend into the page. Mostly, it just gives the picture a backlight so that it will stand out.

Once again though, one of our favorite crafting companies has anticipated our needs and developed a convenient punch board for quickly making any size paper frame.

The We R Memory Keepers Frame Punch Board allows you to make any size paper frame for your scrapbooking and cardmaking projects.

WRMK makes some of the most beloved products in the paper crafting universe. You can click here to see a huge list of all their products available on Amazon.

We are such fans of WRMK that we are immediately inclined to buy anything they create.

This frame punch board was definitely no different, we were super excited to check it out.

After using it for a few days, we decided that we did like it.

But was it really necessary?

Couldn’t we just stick to making frames in the old fashioned way? (Which really means, couldn’t we just continue to not make scrapbook frames for our photos?)

Our craft rooms are already over flowing with tools, some useful, some not so useful.

Did we really need to have yet another tool?

So, we made a list of pros and cons of the WRMK Frame Punch Board to help us decide. At the end of the article, you can see our final verdict.

First though, what does the We R Memory Keepers Frame Punch Board actually do?

With this tool you can very quickly cut out the inside of a square or rectangular paper, regardless of the size.

Watch this short video by WRMK to see how it works.

Basically, the board has a corner rounder on the left side and a small straight line paper trimmer on the right.

To make a frame, you need first punch out the cutting “guidelines” with the corner rounder.  You are supposed to adjust the removable pegs in order to get the desired shape/size of your frame.

Next, you switch to the right side of the board and trim out the inside of the paper. Once again, you need to adjust the pegs so that you have a straight edge on which to align your paper.

Pros & Cons:

Pros:

  • All-Inclusive: What we like about this tool is that you can make a photo frame without needing to search for scissors, a cutting blade, or a ruler. WRMK has put everything you need onto the punch board itself.
  • Quick: Once you get the hang of it, the process is very quick. Even if though we have a die cutting machine and an Silhouette electronic cutting machine, we found that we preferred this punch board simply because it took much less time. You don’t have to fool with software and loading a (sometimes not-so-sticky) cutting mat with tons of tiny paper scraps. You also don’t have to hunt around for dies and then lug out your giant Big Shot, for example.
  • Lightweight: This WRMK tool is super lightweight and small. It’s easy to find space for it, even on a crowded desk.
  • Any Size Frame: Creating a frame to fit any size paper or product is extremely useful, especially if your scrap paper stash is already threatening to overrun your craft room. It is also nice that you can change the thickness of each side individually. It is just as easy to make a thin, even border as it is to make one that fits a traditional Polaroid or Instax photo.

Cons:

  • Learning curve: Like with several other WRMK products, you have to use it a few times before you can go on autopilot. If you don’t use it often, you will probably have to get reacquainted each time.
  • Not Exactly  Revolutionary: This tool pretty much does what several other crafting tools do, but in an all-in-one way. If you want to cut a frame, you already have several options. You can use your electronic cutter, dies, paper trimmer, exacto knife, or even this bada** 360 Gyro cutting tool. But without this punch board from WRMK, making a photo frame does take a lot longer.
  • Dull Blade: Some people say that the cutting blade is not sharp enough to withstand a lot of use. Only a few users have reported this issue though, so its not enough to say that there is a problem with the punch board. We didn’t have any trouble with our blade.

On a related note: The WRMK cutting tools do get a number of complaints about their blades dulling quickly. For example, you can look at these reviews for the WRMK Sew Easy Circles Tool and the WRMK Magnetic Twist Trimmer. Yikes.

Bonus tip: If you have trouble with your cutting blade, try sharpening it with aluminum foil. It could also be the quality of the paper you use. Poor quality paper doesn’t cut well.

Our verdict:

Okay, so it is pretty cool to have. It has a low-ish price point and it does its job well.

If you like to make a lot of frames for your projects, you should maybe consider getting this punch board.

Plus, we love anything that allows us to use up more of our scrap paper stash.

However, if you already have a lot of frame dies and your current system is working well for you, there is no need to purchase an additional product.

We would only recommend it if you do not already have a way to quickly make photo frames for your cardmaking or scrapbooking project.
